Seeing Duluth Winnipeg and Pacific #5910 at Superior, Wisconsin

Duluth Winnipeg and Pacific was one of the first of the Canadian National family of railroads I personally saw.  I visited Superior, Wisconsin on a trip from Davis to Seattle to Chicago in 1991.  In the yard, I saw Duluth, Winnipeg and Pacific SD40 #5910.  That summer, upon returning home, I drew this locomotive among many others in my decision to become a railroad artist.

A Chessie System Train Heads From Cumberland to Pittsburgh

A pair of GP9s pulls a Chessie System general merchandise train from Cumberland to Pittsburgh.  Today's train has several carloads of float glass manufactured by PPG in Cumberland.  These cars are ultimately bound for Detroit.  Chessie System is part of today's +CSX

A Pair of BC Rail SD40-2's Head to Prince George From North Vancouver

Today, we see a pair of SD40-2's among the locomotives at the North Vancouver Yard.  One of the SD40-2's is still dressed in BC Rail's two-tone green paint scheme.  These SD40-2's will lead a train of empty center beam lumber cars to Prince George.
BC Rail played a key role in serving the forest industry of British Columbia.  BC Rail is part of today's Canadian National.

Trains of Montana- The Great Northern
Great Northern helped develop much of Northern Montana, as its iron highway delivered supplies, transported crops at harvest and was the means of travel. Great Northern brochures for its flagship Empire Builder advertised the majesty of Glacier National Park and the beauty of Montana which could be seen from Great Dome cars. Great Northern is part of today's +BNSF Railway .

Santa Fe Locomotives Move Freight Trains at San Bernardino

Santa Fe locomotives move their trains at San Bernardino.  An SD40-2 and SD45-2 lead a hot shot piggyback train to Chicago, while a GP35 and GP9 lead a train of empty refrigerator cars north to Stockton.  Meanwhile, the SSB1200 switch engine builds a train in the yard.

A New Haven Freight Heads From Boston to Hartford




A New Haven freight train heads from Boston to Hartford.  Today's train has carloads from Boston and Maine and Maine Central.  Today's train carries several carloads of candy from the NECCO factory in Cambridge.  New Haven connected the manufacturing and communities of New England and the Northeast.

A North Shore Railroad Grain Train at Beach Haven, Pennsylvania

A North Shore Railroad train carries grain from Beach Haven to Northumberland.  The grain carloads on this train will be interchanged to Norfolk Southern.  Short Line railroads such as the North Shore family of railroads provide first mile/last mile service, delivering carloads of freight to our railroad system.  North Shore Railroad is a member of ASLRRA.

A Santa Fe Train Heads From Los Angeles to Kansas City

A Santa Fe Train heads from Los Angeles to Kansas City.  Today's train has carloads for interchange with the Frisco at Avard, Oklahoma.  Santa Fe and Frisco's teamwork linked the Southwest to Memphis.  Santa Fe and Frisco are part of today's +BNSF Railway 

A Frisco Train Heads For Tulsa, Oklahoma

We see an eastbound Frisco train at Avard, Oklahoma with carloads from the Santa Fe interchange.  Today's train heads for Tulsa, where its Louisville and Nashville bound traffic will be classified to head for Memphis. Frisco played a key role in connecting the railroads of the Southeast and the Southwest. Frisco is a part of today's +BNSF Railway 

Southern Railway Freight Trains at Chattanooga

The Southern Railway mainline is busy at Chattanooga, Tennessee.  A GP30, SD40 and GP38-2 head up the CNO and TP to Cincinnati with carloads of general merchandise.  Meanwhile, An Atlanta bound fast freight gives us a wave as it passes behind an SD45 and SD40-2.

A Duluth Missabe and Iron Range Taconite Train at Proctor, Minnesota

A Duluth Missabe and Iron Range SD38-2 and SD9 lead a train of taconite from Proctor to Two Harbors, Minnesota for loading on Lake Superior.  The ships of Lake Superior for generations have taken the ore of Minnesota to feed our steel industry.  Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range was once part of US Steel's family of railroads, becoming part of of Transtar in 1988.  Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range is today part of Canadian National.

A Baltimore and Ohio E8 Leads the Capitol Limited at Cumberland, Maryland

A Baltimore and Ohio and E8 leads the Capitol Limited at Cumberland, Maryland. From Cumberland, the Capitol Limited heads towards Pittsburgh and onto Chicago.  Amtrak's Washington DC to Chicago Capitol Limited is the successor to this classic Baltimore and Ohio train.

Rock Island Locomotives at Blue Island, Illinois

An F7,  GP40 and GP7 head to Denver with a long general merchandise freight at Blue Island. Meanwhile, an FP7 leads the morning commute into Chicago as a lone GP40 receives service before its next run across the Rock Island.  Blue Island was a busy hub of activity on the Rock Island and remains an important yard for Rock Island successor, Iowa Interstate.

Boston & Maine Locomotives at White River Junction, Vermont

Locomotives of the Boston and Maine await their assignments at White River Junction, Vermont.  The E7 prepares to head south with the Chesire to Boston, as the GP7 and BL2 prepare to take a manifest freight to Springfield.  The 4266 and 4268 F-Units head to Wells River.

Trains of Iowa-Chicago Great Western and Chicago & North Western

Trains of Iowa served connected agriculture and industry.  Out on the plains, we witnessed mile-long Chicago Great Western trains behind four or even five F-units, with the hum of the motors on refrigerated piggyback trailers as Iowa beef headed to market.  From across the Missouri River at Omaha onto Chicago, Chicago Great Western's eventual successor Chicago and North Western connected the trains of the +Union Pacific.

A Central of Georgia Freight Train Carries Swell Plastics Products From Atlanta to Savannah

A Central of Georgia train heads from Savannah to Atlanta behind GP7 and GP18 locomotives. Today's train carries plastic packaging from Sewell Plastics.
Sewell Plastics developed the two-liter bottle for Coca-Cola.  Sewell Plastics is known today as CKS Packaging.  Central of Georgia is part of today's +Norfolk Southern Corp.

Bangor and Aroostook at Northern Maine Junction, Maine

Bangor and Aroostook served Eastern Maine, connecting its communities and its agriculture and timber industries.  These Bangor and Aroostook locomotives and rolling stock take a brief pause for us at Northern Maine Junction, where Bangor and Aroostook connected to Maine Central.

A Great Northern Grain Train at Fargo, North Dakota

A Great Northern freight train pulled by a Big Sky Blue SD45 and U33C heads west at Fargo, North Dakota.  Today's train carries grain from the Great Plains headed to the Port of Seattle.  The locomotives and the train's many freight cars and caboose are adorned by Great Northern's beloved mascot "Rocky the Goat."
Great Northern helped develop Glacier National Park, and was known for the scenic beauty along its right of way.  Great Northern is part of today's +BNSF Railway.

Frisco 4-8-2 #1522 on Display at National Museum of Transportation in St. Louis

The Frisco 4-8-2 #1522 was one of America's beloved excursion steam locomotives throughout the late 1980s and into the 1990s.  Across much of the Midwest and the South, many of us saw the Frisco #1522 steam back to life.
As a young railroad artist, I was truly lucky to be one of the faithful at trackside when the 1522 double-headed with the Norfolk and Western 611 on its way to the National Railway Historical Society convention in Atlanta in 1994.  That was truly a once in a lifetime experience.

A Canadian National grain train heads west at Edmonton, Alberta.  Today's train's ultimate destination is the Port of Vancouver.  Railroads such as Canadian National are vital during the harvest, as they transport grain from the Midwest to ports for global trade.

A New Haven fast freight heads from Boston to New Haven.  In charge of today's train is a GP9, an FA1 and an H16-44.  New Haven was an early pioneer of piggyback service, as New Haven's short hauls caused it to operate fast trains from city to city.

A Glimpse at the Rutland Railroad

Rutland was known as the Green Mountain Gateway.  Rutland connected Vermont, New York and Canada.  Today, we see a Rutland Pacific steam locomotive and Rutland RS3 and 70 tonner locomotives from the diesel era.  Rutland is part of today's ASLRRA member railroads Green Mountain and Vermont Railway.

A Rock Island SW900 Builds a Train Carrying Harmon Glass at Des Moines, Iowa

A Rock Island switch engine builds a train at Des Moines, Iowa.  Today's train carries architectural glass from Harmon Glass bound for interchange at Chicago with Norfolk and Western, Penn Central and Chessie System.  Harmon Glass is now part of Apogee.  Rock Island's route between Council Bluffs and Chicago is part of ASLRRA member regional railroad Iowa Interstate.

A Gulf Mobile and Ohio freight heads from St. Louis to Mobile.  Today's train carries carloads of Crunden-Martin furniture manufactured in the Gateway City.  Crunden-Martin was one of St. Louis's key manufacturers for generations.

The Northern Pacific North Coast Limited at Livingston, Montana

The Northern Pacific North Coast Limited makes its station stop at Livingston, Montana.  Northern Pacific was known as the "Main Street on the Northwest" and was key in the development of Yellowstone National Park.  Northern Pacific is part of today's +BNSF Railway.  ASLRRA member railroad Montana Rail Link provides first mile/last mile freight service to Montana, Idaho and Washington via the former Northern Pacific.
