A Baltimore and Ohio train heads west from Cumberland to Chicago.  Pulling today's train is a F7 and a GP9.  As we give a wave to the crew, we see that the train has carloads of freight headed west for the Burlington Northern.  customtrains.org

In my Rock Island Chicago to Denver #1 Railroad Narrative featuring my artwork, we follow Rock Island SD40-2 #4790 from Chicago to Denver.  We see a Rock Island GP40 at Des Moines, a Union Pacific GP30 at Omaha and a Rock Island GP7 at Lincoln.  At Denver, we see a Rio Grande SD45 and a Burlington Northern F7.

This photo was taken in 1992. I was laying out some my drawing I had done as possibilities for a book my mom wanted me to write, "The ABC's of America's Railroads". I had hair and I had just started drawing trains to share with railroads and museums across America. Now 30 years later I have drawn about 4,000 train drawings and lost a lot of hair. Burlington Northern F7 644 leads a local train at Portland, Oregon.  Today's train takes box cars and bulkhead flat cars back to the lumber mills.

Railroads of Denver by Andy Fletcher

Denver plays an important role as a railroad city.  Its location made it an important gateway to the crossing of the Rocky Mountains to the west.  

The Rio Grande connected Denver to Salt Lake City, while railroads such as the Chicago Burlington and Quincy and Rock Island connected Denver to Chicago.  Santa Fe continued to the southwest to Los Angeles.  Union Pacific, in the years before its acquisition of the Rio Grande and then the Southern Pacific as well as the Chicago and North Western, connected Denver to Omaha.  Chicago, Burlington and Quincy would become part of Burlington Northern, which would ultimately merge with Santa Fe to form BNSF.

This Burlington Northern GP9 leads a local freight at Seattle, Washington.  Seattle was one of the first cities that I visited to railfan, as I was always a fan of the Burlington Northern.

Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Locomotives move trains at Lincoln, Nebraska

These Chicago, Burlington and Quincy locomotives move trains at Lincoln, Nebraska.  The GP35 heads west to Denver with a general merchandise train.  Its box cars wear the slogans "Everywhere West" and "Way of the Zephyrs," advertising the passenger trains of the CB and Q.

In a few short years, CB and Q will become a part of Burlington Northern and shortly thereafter, Amtrak will begin operation of America's passenger trains.

Duluth, Winnipeg & Pacific RS11s Move Freight to International Falls

 

These Duluth, Winnipeg and Pacific locomotives move trains at Duluth.  At the yard office, you can feel the chill of a cold winter's evening along Lake Superior.  

Meanwhile, a pair of RS11s departs to International Falls with transfer freight from Burlington Northern.

Great Northern and Burlington Northern Inspired Me to Become a Railroad Artist

As a boy, I saw Great Northern box cars on freight trains as they traveled through my hometown of Davis, California. At my local hobby store, I bought a postcard of the Great Northern Empire Builder crossing Marias Pass. My dad said, "Someday we will go there." That led to many summer trips to the Izaak Walton Inn in Essex, Montana, where I fell in love with watching Burlington Northern trains and decided to become a railroad artist.

A Burlington Northern Grain Train Heads to the Port of Portland

This Burlington Northern grain train makes its way west at Fargo, North Dakota as it heads toward the Port of Portland.  This train heads on Burlington Northern's former Great Northern Hi-Line.  Burlington Northern is part of today's BNSF.
