Trains of the West by Andy Fletcher

Railroads helped build our West.  Railroads such as Union Pacific, Central Pacific, Great Northern, Northern Pacific, Milwaukee Road and Santa Fe greatly reduced transit time to the Pacific and brought settlers who developed the land.

Railroads of Illinois: A History of the State's Great Railroads and Their Names

Illinois is a crossroads of America's railroads. Railroads connect throughout the state of Illinois as they make their journey across our nation.  Many railroads throughout Illinois took their name from not only America's busiest rail city, Chicago, but from Illinois's geography and its communities.  No conversation is complete without mentioning the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific; the Illinois Central; the Illinois Terminal; the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific and many other legendary railroads that served Illinois.

Railroads of Omaha

As a railroad town, Omaha's legacy will always be firmly planted as the home of Union Pacific.   Historically, Omaha and neighboring Council Bluffs, Iowa, have served as a crossroads of railroad traffic as it crosses America.
Railroads such as Union Pacific, Missouri Pacific, Chicago Burlington and Quincy, Rock Island, Chicago and North Western, Chicago Great Western and Milwaukee Road once served these cities.
Today Omaha and Council Bluffs are served by Union Pacific, BNSF, ASLRRA member railroad Iowa Interstate and Amtrak.

A Milwaukee Road Freight Train at Aberdeen, South Dakota

This Milwaukee Road freight train crosses the Great Plains at Aberdeen, South Dakota.  Milwaukee Road was the last transcontinental railroad, and was much the underdog to its competitors of the Upper Midwest, Great Northern and Northern Pacific.
The train rambles west, as a vast thunderhead crosses.  In tow are combines and empty grain hoppers, both headed towards the grain harvest.  The grain season truly gives a much needed boost to Milwaukee Road's traffic.

The Milwaukee Road and Its Pacific Extension-A Fulfilled Prophecy

I have always had a fascination with the Milwaukee Road and its extension to the Pacific Northwest.  Although this westward extension across Minnesota, South Dakota, Montana, Idaho and Washington never became the robust source of traffic that headquarters had hoped, to me, the extension westward was a fulfilled prophecy of reaching the Pacific.
Many railroads in that day had expansive names of cities and regions of America that they never quite reached.  Very successful railroads such as the St. Louis and San Francisco did not venture past the lower Midwest.  Even the Missouri Pacific and the Chicago Rock Island and Pacific only made it as far as west as Denver.
Thus, I admire the Milwaukee Road for its extension to the Pacific.  In the words of William Clark, "Ocean in view, O the Joy."
