Frisco, Louisville and Nashville, Seaboard Coast Line 3-Engine Exhibit Andy Fletcher

Frisco was known for its slogan "Ship It On The Frisco!"  The Frisco, formally known as St. Louis-San Francisco, played played a key role in linking railroads from the Southeast and the Southwest.  Here we see a Frisco GP35 connecting to the Louisville and Nashville.  Louisville and Nashville would then deliver carloads to the Seaboard Coast Line, taking those carloads to Virginia, Carolinas and Florida.

Frisco SD45 947 by Andy Fletcher

Frisco SD45 #947 was a drawing I did after that first Houston train show that I mentioned earlier.  To prepare for that show, I had done a couple of Frisco drawings that were  popular.  Shortly thereafter, there was a Great American Train Show in Tulsa, which was a Frisco town, so, I thought it would be a great idea to draw several more Frisco locomotives including SD45 #947.

Frisco 4-8-2 #1522 on Display at National Museum of Transportation in St. Louis

The Frisco 4-8-2 #1522 was one of America's beloved excursion steam locomotives throughout the late 1980s and into the 1990s.  Across much of the Midwest and the South, many of us saw the Frisco #1522 steam back to life.
As a young railroad artist, I was truly lucky to be one of the faithful at trackside when the 1522 double-headed with the Norfolk and Western 611 on its way to the National Railway Historical Society convention in Atlanta in 1994.  That was truly a once in a lifetime experience.

The Milwaukee Road and Its Pacific Extension-A Fulfilled Prophecy

I have always had a fascination with the Milwaukee Road and its extension to the Pacific Northwest.  Although this westward extension across Minnesota, South Dakota, Montana, Idaho and Washington never became the robust source of traffic that headquarters had hoped, to me, the extension westward was a fulfilled prophecy of reaching the Pacific.
Many railroads in that day had expansive names of cities and regions of America that they never quite reached.  Very successful railroads such as the St. Louis and San Francisco did not venture past the lower Midwest.  Even the Missouri Pacific and the Chicago Rock Island and Pacific only made it as far as west as Denver.
Thus, I admire the Milwaukee Road for its extension to the Pacific.  In the words of William Clark, "Ocean in view, O the Joy."
