Durand, Michigan, a Key Railroad Town

Durand, Michigan has historically been a key railroad town.  It serves as a center of the flow of traffic throughout the Great Lakes Region and onward to the Northeast and the Midwest.
Grand Trunk Western maintained one of its principal yards at Durand.  Grand Trunk Western is part of today's Canadian National.

Detroit Toledo and Ironton "We Have The Connections"

Railroads maintained the tradition of using bold logos and catchy slogans as a way of self-promotion.  The Detroit, Toledo and Ironton railroad was no exception.  Its locomotives stood with large initials "DT and I" upon their hoods with the slogan "We Have The Connections," promoting the Detroit Toledo and Ironton's role as a link between the industries of Michigan and Ohio.

Today's Drawing-Grand Trunk Western GP9 #4136 July 14, 2015

Today I drew Grand Trunk Western GP9 #4136.  In its career, this locomotive served on both the Grand Trunk Western and Central Vermont.
I always enjoy drawing Grand Trunk Western, as many of my first memories of this railroad were seeing its auto-racks and 86' auto parts box cars.  I have always associated the Grand Trunk Western with the manufacturing of the Great Lakes region.  Throughout its history, "The Good Track Road" truly was the railroad that connected much of industry of the North Central United States.
