Today I drew Akron and Barberton Cluster SW1500 #1501.  Akron and Barberton Cluster is owned by Wheeling & Lake Erie and operates over the track of the former Akron and Barberton Belt Railway.

February 1st-Happy Birthday, Penn Central!

Penn Central was formed on February 1, 1968 when railroad giants Pennsylvania Railroad and New York Central merged.  Happy Birthday, Penn Central!

I just drew Erie Western RS3 #1600. Erie Western was a short-lived but well loved shortline in Indiana and Ohio. This drawing came at the request of Erie Western fan John Eagan of Hoosier Hobbies.

Today I drew Youngstown & Austintown GP7 #1501. This engine was former Pittsburgh & Lake Erie GP7 #1501 and became Ohio Central #1501.

Today I drew Ohio Central GP7 #1501.  This locomotive was formerly Pittsburgh & Lake Erie GP7 1501 that I drew yesterday.  I will be giving the original of this drawing to Ohio Central engineer Robert Mike Shontz.

Baltimore & Ohio-Linking 13 Great States with the Nation

Baltimore & Ohio connected the Eastern Seaboard with Appalachia, the Ohio River, the Great Lakes and the Midwest.  Baltimore & Ohio's slogan was "Linking 13 Great States with the Nation."

Erie Lackawanna Train at Marion, Ohio

An Erie Lackawanna train crosses the diamond at Marion, Ohio.  We give a wave to the Chicago bound train.

Today's train travels the tracks of the former Erie.  As the caboose passes our vantage, we give the conductor a wave.  Onward the train travels to Chicago.

Bessemer and Lake Erie Ore Train at Conneaut, Ohio

A Bessemer and Lake Erie train heads south from the ore docks at Conneaut, Ohio.  Its cargo heads to North Bessemer Yard and a connection with the Union Railroad.
Bessemer and Lake Erie and Union Railroad and sister Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range were all part of the US Steel Family of railroads.  These railroads worked together to haul iron ore from the Iron Range of Minnesota to the steel mills of Pittsburgh.

The Norfolk Southern Whistle-Stop Safety Train

The Norfolk Southern Whistle-Stop Safety Train continues on its tour of Kentucky and Ohio.  Norfolk Southern operates trains such as the Whistle-Stop Safety train in partnership with Operation Lifesaver.

Trains such as the Whistle-Stop safety train carry local first responders as their passengers, giving them an opportunity to see the profile of the track and the location of grade crossings.  Safety instructions are taught by an Operation Lifesaver presenter about how to prevent grade crossing accidents and how to stop trespassing on railroad property.

CSX Along The Big Sandy

At Catlettsburg, Kentucky the CSX former Chesapeake and Ohio line hugs the Big Sandy River.  Trains make their way from Huntington to Ashland.  We give a wave to the Amtrak Cardinal.
Across the river at Kenova, West Virginia, the Norfolk Southern Heartland Corridor connects Roanoke, Virginia with Bellevue, Ohio.  We hear a train in the distance on this summer morning.


 

Detroit Toledo and Ironton "We Have The Connections"

Railroads maintained the tradition of using bold logos and catchy slogans as a way of self-promotion.  The Detroit, Toledo and Ironton railroad was no exception.  Its locomotives stood with large initials "DT and I" upon their hoods with the slogan "We Have The Connections," promoting the Detroit Toledo and Ironton's role as a link between the industries of Michigan and Ohio.
